Since 1981, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week has challenged the nation to extend its vision of crime victims’ rights and services to reach every victim of crime. Each year, communities across the country celebrate decades of hard-earned progress in securing the rights, resources and protections that crime victims need to rebuild their lives. |

This year, NCVRW encourages us to define and address “New Challenges and New Solutions” that face the fields of crime victim assistance, criminal justice and public safety. Full Article |

Council on Crime and Justice staff respond to Katherine Kersten's piece Minnesota's New "Victim" Class. In her rush to expose a liberal-lawyer conspiracy, she did exactly what she accuses others of doing. She approached a highly complex issue with simplistic jargon such as “the new victim class,” failed to recognize the irrefutability of some of the facts and glossed over an issue that has profound implications for all of us and how we live together. Retailers Track Employee Thefts in Vast Databases
Facing a wave of employee theft, retailers across the country have helped amass vast databases of workers accused of stealing and are using that information to keep employees from working again in the industry. New York Times Article
"Behind Bars/Beyond Bars" was presented by the Council and the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center (BTAC). The panel discussion centered around the role of arts programs in correctional settings, and the positive impacts for participants and was part of the ongoing Out of the Abyss show running at the BTAC through May 17th, 2013. April 23, 2013 Healing Justice Reconvening The American Friends Service Committee reconvenes this event for all people concerned with a holistically healthy Minnesota, specifically viewed through the lens of healing justice, which centers around the principles of responsibility, mutuality and love. More information.
April 25, 2013 American Exceptionalism in Crime & Punishment Building on the research of speakers Nicola Lacey and David Soskice, both of Oxford University, the conference will examine the case of American exceptionalism and will compare US criminal justice policies with those in other developed nations. The conference aims to develop proposals for how the US system might be reformed moving forward. More Information.
April 25, 2013 Webinar - Therapy Animals Helping Maltreated Children Learn how pets can assist crime victims as therapy animals. Presented by national expert Allie Phillips from teh National District Attorneys Association. More information.
May 6, 2013 Pull of Gravity Screening and Discussion The Humphrey School's Social Policy and Policy Analysis Area, The Cowles Chair for the Study of Public Service, University of Minnesota Sociology Department, Council on Crime and Justice, Second Chance Coalition, and The Robina Institute present a screening and discussion of the documentary, Pull of Gravity, a film that follows three men in the process of reentry into society following incarceration. May 11, 2013 Confess the Council on Crime and Justice’s Emily Baxter partners with local literary magazine Revolver for Confess - an evening of storytelling, dance, and revelry. Emily, working as a Bush Fellow, has gathered stories of individuals who committed crimes but were not caught, and is using those stories as lenses through which we can examine how collateral consequences cripple Minnesota and a challenge to reconsider the value of a criminal record.
