CRIME VICTIMS RESOURCES & RIGHTS: Reperations / Financial Assistance

What Is Reparations?

Reparations is financial assistance for victims of crimes involving injury or death such as: homicide, assault, robbery, domestic abuse, stalking, kidnapping, sexual assault, child abuse, criminal vehicular operation (CVO) and drunk driving.

Who Can Apply?

• Person who suffers a personal injury (physical or emotional) or death as a result of a crime.
• Person who is injured trying to prevent a crime, apprehend a suspect or help a police officer.
• Victim’s family members, dependents, or estate.
• Person who has paid for some of victim’s services.
• Guardian, guardian ad litem, conservator or authorized agent of any of these persons.

What are the Requirements for Reparations?

• Crime took place in Minnesota (Exception: Minnesota resident victimized in a country that does not have a compensation program)
• Crime reported to police within 30 days (Sexual assault & child abuse are not subjected to the 30 days, but police report still required)
• Full cooperation with police and city/county attorney.
• File Reparations claim form within 3 years of the crime. (Child abuse claims need to be filed within 3 years of the police report.)
• Victim’s behavior cannot have contributed to the incident.
• Car accidents must involve: alcohol or drugs, Criminal Vehicular Operation (CVO), or Hit and Run.
• Submit all expense to insurance company and HMO prior to filing for Reparations.

(Reparations pays only expenses not covered by other funding source)

• Funeral & Burial Costs• Medical, Dental & Prescription Costs
• Mental Health Counseling• Lost Financial Support for deceased victim’s dependents.
• Lost Wages
• Substitute Child Care and Professional Household Services
• Clean-up costs from crime scene
• Costs to return abducted child
• Remodeling of household for accessibility
